A man who was fatally shot in the heart of downtown Oakland early Sunday morning has been identified by the Alameda County coroner’s bureau as 31-year-old Roderick Price of Redwood City, who worked as a custodian at Claremont Middle School in Oakland.
Oakland police said he was one of three people who suffered bullet wounds in a shooting in the 1500 block of Broadway at about 1:45 a.m. Sunday.
All three victims took themselves to hospitals outside of Oakland.
Price was later pronounced dead but the other two victims survived their injuries.
Oakland Unified School District spokesman Troy Flint said today that Price’s supervisor at Claremont Middle School and other staff members described him as “a humble and quiet man who was dedicated to his work.” Flint said Price worked as a night custodian and made sure that the school’s hallways and classrooms “were clean and ready to go” by the time teachers and students arrived in the morning.
Flint said teachers and staff members at Claremont Middle School who participated in a professional development day on Wednesday began their day with a period of reflection about Price and shared their recollections of him.
He said school officials are in touch with Price’s family about arranging a memorial service for him.
