The Contra Costa County coroner’s office Wednesday identified a woman killed while walking on state Highway 4 in Antioch early Sunday morning.
Authorities said they aren’t sure why the woman, identified by the coroner’s office as 50-year-old Jackie Lynn Rhodes, was walking across the highway when a Toyota Corolla struck her.
California Highway Patrol Officer John Fransen said:
“We don’t know what caused her to be out there. … Hopefully this won’t become a trend where people walk on the freeway.”
The driver of the Corolla, a 26-year-old Concord woman, told police she tried to swerve, but didn’t have enough time to avoid Rhodes, who officers identified as a Pittsburg resident, according to the CHP.
Officers were called around 12:40 a.m. Sunday to the eastbound lanes of Highway 4 just east of A Street, where they found Rhodes suffering from fatal injuries, CHP officials said.
The driver remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation, Fransen said. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be factors in the crash.
The CHP is asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision to assist in the investigation by calling (925) 646-4980.
