A high-speed car race in Salinas on Tuesday night led to a collision that has left four people with major injuries, police said.
Shortly before 9 p.m. Tuesday, two 19-year-old men, one driving a Ford Mustang and the other behind the wheel of an Acura Integra, raced each other on eastbound Harden Parkway from North Main Street, near the Harden Ranch Plaza shopping center, police said.
A 34-year-old woman driving a Ford Explorer on Regency Circle turned onto Harden Parkway and into the Acura’s path, according to police.
The collision caused the Ford Explorer to roll over and strike a tree near Broadway Drive, police said.
The impact of the collision left the Acura driver and two of his 17-year-old passengers pinned under the vehicle’s dashboard, according to police.
Emergency crews extricated the trio, police said.
One of the 17-year-old girls who sat next to the Acura driver suffered injuries that were considered life-threatening, police said.
The Ford Explorer driver and all three occupants of the Acura were transported to a hospital with major injuries, according to police.
The Acura driver was found with a suspended driver’s license, police said.
The Mustang left behind skid marks on the roadway that stretched for hundreds of feet, police said.
The Ford Mustang driver stopped at the scene and was detained by officers for questioning along with his 17-year-old passenger and was later released, according to police.
The Mustang driver, who is on felony probation, voluntarily provided a blood sample and it does not appear he was under the influence of alcohol during the incident, police said.
