The quake was reported at 6:49 a.m. and was located about a mile north of Piedmont and 3 miles southeast of Berkeley, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
BART officials said train service is recovering from 10-minute delays systemwide caused by the earthquake. Trains were stopped while crews inspected the tracks for possible damage.
No damage or injuries have been reported as a result of the quake.
