Orioles pummel A’s with 9-2 thumping

There’s no nice way to describe what happened at the Coliseum Monday.

The A’s were absolutely pummeled by Baltimore 9-2, with eight Orioles runs scored before the middle of the fifth inning, and 42 total batters faced by Oakland pitching.

Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis took A’s starter Jesse Chavez (L, 5-11, 3.88 ERA) deep in the first, scoring three runs on a towering blast over the 388-foot marker in right field.

Adam Jones doubled in the third inning, scoring Gerardo Parra, and catcher Caleb Joseph took Chavez deep in the fourth inning for two more runs, prompting A’s manager Bob Melvin to call for some relief.

Chavez lasted 3-2/3 innings before newly-acquired left-hander Felix Doubront came in, allowing three more runs on two doubles and one single.

Doubront lasted into the end of the eighth inning, with Evan Scribner pitching Oakland’s final frame of the night.

Outfielder Coco Crisp was activated from the 60-day disabled list earlier Monday and scored a run in the fourth inning after first baseman Ike Davis singled. Infielder Eric Sogard scored in the eighth on a single from catcher Stephen Vogt.

The A’s fall to 47-60 with the loss. Their season has been effectively over for some time now, while Baltimore is solidly in the hunt for an American League wild card berth at 54-51.
