Ex-caregiver pleads guilty to sexual assault

A former caregiver has pleaded guilty to sexual assault charges on a developmentally delayed adult, Sonoma County District Attorney Jill Ravitch announced Thursday.

Rex Bradford Salyer, 63, of Santa Rosa, pleaded guilty to two felony counts of oral copulation with a person unable to consent, one felony count of rape of a person who is unable to consent and one felony county of abuse of a dependent adult.

Salyer is scheduled for sentencing on Sept. 29 and faces a mandatory state prison sentence of three to 12 years, prosecutors said.

The charges stemmed from the abuse of a 35-year-old developmentally delayed female currently committed to the Sonoma Developmental Center, who reported she had been sexually assaulted on July 4, 2014, prosecutors said.

Salyer had been employed as a psychiatric technician at the facility for about 18 months and provided one-on-one supervision to the victim, prosecutors said.

The victim reported the July 4, 2014 incident was not the first time she had been assaulted by the defendant, prosecutors said.
