Amtrak train strikes, kills Salinas man

A 27-year-old man was struck and killed by an Amtrak train in Salinas on Wednesday evening, police said Friday.

He was identified as Salinas resident Luis Bravo Betancourt, according to the Monterey County coroner’s office.

Shortly before 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, the man was walking on the railroad tracks underneath the Sanborn overcrossing between Sanborn Place and Hansen Street, police Cmdr. David Crabill said.

A northbound Amtrak train struck the man, later identified as Betancourt, who was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Crabill.

The train conductor warned the man of the oncoming train prior to the collision, Crabill said.

Union Pacific Railroad is conducting an investigation into the collision, he said.
