Tyler Clippard is the next Oakland A’s player to be shipped away.
The A’s received pitcher Casey Meisner from the New York Mets in exchange, a 20-year-old drafted in 2014 with an above average fastball.
Meisner has posted a 10-4 record and a 2.35 ERA in 18 A-ball starts in 2015. Meisner was originally selected by the Mets in the third round of the 2014 draft.
Clippard is having his worst season since 2009 when based on advanced numbers like FIP (3.89) and WHIP (1.190), though his strikeout (38) and walk (21) numbers have also taken a trip in the wrong direction.
He was originally slated to be the setup man, with Sean Doolittle still the closer, but things didn’t work out that way. The A’s performance this season means Clippard hasn’t been given many save opportunities.
The last-place A’s couldn’t do much for the journeyman relief pitcher, but now he’ll get a shot in a contending environment.
Clippard is an impending free agent, and was not likely to resign with the A’s. He was traded to Oakland during the offseason to Washington for infielder Yunel Escobar.
The move is a win for the A’s, considering leaving the diamond with enough runs has been an issue this season. And Meisner is probably a steal considering Clippard’s recent sample.
