Search underway for missing Bay Area teacher

A search is underway for a Bay Area teacher last seen more than a week ago in the Rock Creek area of El Dorado County, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office.

Edward Cavanaugh, a 46-year-old man, went missing July 17 while riding a blue Yamaha YZ 250 on the Rock Creek trail system, sheriff’s officials said. Trails in the Rock Creek system are in the Georgetown Divide, between the towns of Mosquito and Garden Valley, according to the sheriff’s office.

Cavanaugh has a home along or near the trail system and had been riding the trails with another person. Cavanaugh has a medical condition and disappeared when he separated from that person, according to the sheriff’s office.

About 50 volunteers from five counties searched the area on foot, using off-road vehicles and with a California Highway Patrol helicopter, according to the sheriff’s office.

Sheriff’s office Sgt. Jeff Leikauf said he didn’t know whether the search and rescue team found any clues to Cavanaugh’s whereabouts.

About 20 of Cavanaugh’s relatives and friends also searched the area, Leikauf said.

Cavanaugh was last wearing a black helmet and Fox brand dirt bike clothing, according to the sheriff’s office.

Anyone with information about Cavanaugh is being asked to get in touch with the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office at (530) 621-6600.
