The “Wragg” vegetation fire has now burned 4,000 acres of steep, brush covered terrain in the Lake Berryessa area of Napa County, a Cal Fire spokeswoman said, and firefighters are planning to remain on scene overnight.
The fire started after a vehicle accident at 7700 state Highway 128 at Wragg Canyon Road at 2:24 p.m. and has maintained a rapid rate of spread helped by erratic wind conditions, Cal Fire spokeswoman Suzie Blankenship said.
The fire was 5 percent contained at 9:30 p.m., and there were 380 firefighters at the scene.
Mandatory evacuations have been ordered for the Quail Ridge community, where there are currently 150 structures threatened by the fire.
Mandatory evacuations have also been ordered for the Golden Bear community, according to Blankenship.
Homeowners in the Mix Canyon area, where structures were threatened, campers at Canyon Creek Campground and hikers in the Cold Canyon area have been evacuated, Blankenship said.
State Highway 128 at Wragg Canyon Road is closed to through traffic, Blankenship said.
No injuries have been reported and at this time there are no known structures destroyed by the fire. The cause of today’s blaze is still under investigation.
The Red Cross has opened an evacuation center at the Winters Community Center at 201 Railroad Ave., in Winters, according to Blankenship.
