Cleanup efforts target Santa Cruz, Monterey beaches

Beach cleanup volunteers are asking for help cleaning up six high-traffic beaches Sunday in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties, according to Save Our Shores.

Volunteers will be out from 8 to 10 a.m. at Cowell and Main Beach, Twin Lakes State Beach, Seabright State Beach, Seacliff State Beach, Sunny Cove, Hidden Beach, Moran Lake Beach, Del Monte Beach and Carmel City Beach, SOS officials said.

UPDATE 7/7 Beach cleanup nets nearly one ton of trash.

A roving crew will start at Davenport Beach and may go as far as Panther Beach.

Volunteers can get supplies for the cleanup from SOS sanctuary steward cleanup captains Sunday morning, according to SOS. The annual cleanup stems the tide of coastline trash, SOS officials said.

SOS is a Central Coast organization, which aims to care for the marine environment through advocacy, citizen action and by promoting ocean awareness.
