A firework started a two-alarm brush fire Saturday afternoon in the Oakland Hills, according to the Oakland Fire Department The fire was first reported at 3:50 p.m. inside Joaquin Miller Park near the Chabot Space & Science Center and the Oakland California Temple, according to dispatchers and a battalion chief.
The temple is a building of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Battalion Chief James Bowron said the best access to the fire was off Castle Drive. Bowron said six engines responded and the fire department received help from Cal Fire and firefighters from the East Bay Regional Park District.
Firefighters upgraded the fire to two alarms at 4:04 p.m. Bowron said a couple of homes were threatened but none sustained damaged. No one was hurt, Bowron said.
Firefighters extinguished the fire at about 6 p.m. and contained it to about three acres, according to the fire department.
Bowron said a Piccolo Pete firework started the fire and investigators are searching for the person who lit the Piccolo Pete.
