Rusty Cain gives up five runs, two homers, four walks

After weeks of anxiety surrounding the crowded Giants rotation, they made a move.

No surprises here: Matt Cain made his first start since July 9 of last year on Thursday in Miami, sending Tim Lincecum — who was pegged in the right arm with a line drive in his last start — to the 15-day DL.

Cain and the Giants faced the Marlins and Jose Fernandez, who himself took the mound after a 13-month recovery from Tommy John surgery. Two comeback kids entered, and Fernandez took the prize in Miami’s 5-4 win.

Fernandez dealt six innings and gave up three runs in his first win of the season. Cain struggled.

Cain held down a 3-1 Giants lead through four innings that Fernandez himself and Justin Bour cracked wide open with a solo shot and a three-run go-ahead homer respectively. Cain ended up going five innings, allowing seven hits, four walks and the two home runs while striking out two.

Cain’s welcome-back loss sealed Miami’s first home sweep over the Giants since 1999.

Jake Peavy is expected to start game one of the Giants’ three-game series in Washington. Tim Hudson will probably get the boot, says Bay Area News Group’s Andrew Baggarly, either on 7-day personal leave or the 15-day DL to rest his ailing throwing shoulder and hip.

Shortstop signing

Free agent international signings started Thursday. The Giants took no time settling on some overseas prospects, per Henry Shulman of the Chronicle: Lucius Fox, an 18-year-old shortstop from the Bahamas, is expected to sign a $6 million bonus ($10 million cost with taxes).
