Dog with bound legs found drowned in canal

A dog found dead with its legs bound in a Walnut Creek canal on Monday is being investigated as a case of animal cruelty, Contra Costa County Animal Services officials said today.

Workers found a dead dog in the Contra Costa Water District canal at Walnut Avenue near Oak Grove Road on Monday, according to animal services officials.

As the workers were pulling the dog out of the canal, they noticed its legs were bound with a shoelace. The dog was later identified as a 14-year-old merle Australian Shepherd named Gino, according to department officials.

Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to contact animal services at (925) 335-8373.
