Fixie rider killed in crash with police car

A bicyclist was killed Friday night in a collision with a marked police patrol vehicle near McLaren Park in San Francisco.

The collision occurred around 9 p.m. on Persia Avenue at a bend in the road near Sunnydale Avenue, San Francisco police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said.

The bicyclist was a man in his 20s and was riding a fixed-speed bicycle. Esparza said it was unclear Friday night if the patrol vehicle collided with the bicyclist or if the bicyclist hit the vehicle.

Following the collision, the officers stopped and called for an ambulance, but the man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The police department’s Traffic Collision Investigations and Crime Scene Investigations units responded to the scene to investigate the incident.

Esparza said the department’s thoughts go out to the bicyclist’s family as well as the two officers involved in the incident. The department will conduct an administrative process that will include a toxicology sample for the driver, Esparza said.
