Shoplifting program to pilot at Walmart

The San Jose Police Department, the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office and Walmart on Friday announced an online Shoplifter Release Pilot Program.

The program will use an online shoplifter reporting system that will allow the business victim to process suspected shoplifters more efficiently, police said.

Police said the program will allow patrol officers to answer higher priority calls for service and follow up on community policing projects citywide while still being available to respond to the business victim of shoplifting crimes under certain circumstances.

The pilot program will go for at least six months at the Walmart at 777 Story Road.

The police department will monitor the program and re-evaluate its viability after the six-month trial period.
