Grounded boat on Ocean Beach may be stolen

A boat grounded on Ocean Beach Friday afternoon and abandoned might have been stolen from a San Francisco yacht club, according to a U.S. Coast Guard official.

The boat, a white vessel named Daisy, was reported on the beach around 3:30 p.m., according to Coast Guard Lt. Marcia Medina. A witness put the location at near Lawton Street.

National Parks Service and San Francisco Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and found the boat already grounded. It contained “multiple beer cans” but there was no one aboard, Medina said.

A witness told National Parks Service officials that he saw the vessel run aground, and an individual jumped off and came ashore. The witness attempted to speak to the person, to see if they were ok, but the person did not answer and left the scene, Medina said.

Investigators are looking into whether the boat is one by the same name and description reported stolen from the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco recently, Medina said.

The coast guard is working with the owner and the yacht club on salvaging the boat, and also working to determine how much fuel is on board and make sure it is safely contained, Medina said.
