Caltrans vehicle carjacked after collision

A Caltrans vehicle was carjacked by a man with a gun after an early-morning collision on Interstate Highway 580 in Castro Valley today, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Around 5:25 a.m. a convoy of Cal-Trans vehicles was on its way to a sweeping detail on Interstate Highway 238 when a black BMW crashed into an attenuator truck with its crash cushion lowered, according to the CHP.

Two attenuator trucks stopped after the collision. The driver of the BMW brandished a handgun, carjacked the Caltrans vehicle and fled west on Highway 580 towards Oakland, according to the CHP.

The stolen vehicle was located in Oakland at 8:01 a.m., but as of this afternoon, the suspect had not yet been found. He’s described as a man in his early 20s with a thin build and long, dark, wavy hair.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Castro Valley CHP at (510) 581-9028.
