A local boy made good Wednesday, but it wasn’t in the A’s favor.
Redwood City native Daniel Nava‘s bloop single to left field in the second knocked in Hanley Ramirez as the Boston Red Sox shut out the A’s Wednesday by a score of 2-0.
Oakland starter Sonny Gray got no love from his offense, pitching a spectacular seven innings with nine strikeouts and only three hits. The A’s only got five hits in 36 chances, another five hitters getting a free pass.
After lighting up the Coliseum Tuesday evening, the A’s had a chance to win back-to-back games at home for the first time this season. No dice.
In the top of the second, Ramirez reached on a hard hit ball to right fielder Josh Reddick, bringing up Pablo Sandoval.
Sandoval struck out swinging, as did Brock Holt in the next at bat, but Gray’s strikeout pitch flew past catcher Josh Phegley and Ramirez advanced to second base.
Nava’s blooper came on the following at bat, a softly hit ball that might have been knocked down by the wind if it were a night game. It was enough to allow Ramirez to round third and score.
Though Boston only had seven batters reach base to Oakland’s 10, the Red Sox made the most of it.
The A’s will take a day off Thursday then finish the homestand with a three-game weekend series against the White Sox.
