Four dead in car crash in Gilroy

Four people died, including a child, in a suspected DUI crash in Gilroy on Tuesday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported at about 10:30 p.m. by a resident who heard a large crash on Leavesley Road, CHP Officer Amy Tritenbach said.

Officers responded and found a 1998 Ford Mustang on its roof and five people inside. Four of them — three females and a male — were pronounced dead at the scene, Tritenbach said. She did not immediately have more information on the passengers’ identities.

The driver of the Mustang, a 23-year-old man, was taken to Regional Medical Center of San Jose with major injuries.

Investigators determined he had been driving under the influence of alcohol and arrested him on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter, then released him for further treatment at the hospital, Tritenbach said.

His name was not immediately being released. CHP officers determined the Mustang was traveling east on Leavesley and left the roadway on a “large, sweeping curve” as the road
becomes Ferguson Road, Tritenbach said.

The car hit a dirt berm, went airborne, overturned and landed on its roof, she said. The CHP is continuing to investigate the fatal crash.
