Suspect in attempted sex assaults arrested

San Jose police arrested a suspect Friday in two attempted sexual assault cases on separate females in the last two months, one of which involved a 13-year-old girl, San Jose police said today.

Police arrested 31-year-old San Jose resident Mohammad Khaliqi without incident at about 10:25 a.m. in the 1400 block of School Street in San Leandro, police said. He was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of multiple counts of burglary, attempted sexual assault and false imprisonment, according to police.

Police suspect Khaliqi attempted to sexually assault a 28-year-old woman in the restroom of Mitsuwa Marketplace April 2 and the 13-year-old girl as she got home from school Tuesday, according to police.

Khaliqi allegedly followed the girl as she was walking home from school and forced his way through the front door of the home in the 4000 block of Rio Vista Avenue as the girl went inside.

Khaliqi fled before police got to the home, police said.

Police said Khaliqi also got away from Mitsuwa Marketplace, a Japanese grocery store at 675 Saratoga Avenue before officers arrived at the store shortly before 1 p.m.

Police are asking anyone with information about these or another unreported incident to call Detective Brandon Scholten at (408) 277-4102.
