San Jose city officials announced Tuesday the names given to three female peregrine falcon chicks that were born atop City Hall earlier this year.
After the city held a contest for public school children to name the chicks, judges chose the winning names, Hunter, Buzo and Sky, city officials said.
The contest was first announced on April 1, just after the three were born.
Judges included representatives from the Children’s Discovery Museum, Project Learning Tree, Silicon Valley Creates, FalconCam volunteers and biologist Glenn Stewart of the UC Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group.
Earlier this month, Stewart placed bands on a leg of each one with a number, so they can be identified after they learn to fly and leave the nest, according to city officials.
The next step for the chicks will be fledging, or learning to fly, which will likely take place next week, city officials said.
Peregrine falcons have been living on the ledge of the 18-story City Hall building since 2007, when Stewart installed the nest box for them there.
Each time new chicks hatch in the nest, the city holds a contest for school children ages 5 to 18 to nominate names for them in essays and art projects such as songs and videos, according to city officials.
