Pedestrian killed by distracted driver identified

The Contra Costa County coroner’s office has identified a pedestrian who was fatally struck by a vehicle in unincorporated Bay Point on Tuesday as 23-year-old Concord resident Raul Missael Juarez.

The collision was reported at 3:11 p.m. near Loftus Road and Schooner Way, where a gray Honda Civic struck Juarez, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Juarez was transported to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. At about 4:45 p.m., coroner’s officials notified the CHP that he had died, CHP officials said.

The Honda driver, a 24-year-old Pittsburg man, stayed at the scene of the collision, according to CHP spokesman John Fransen.

Fransen said the driver may have become distracted while his front passenger repositioned herself to console their 11-month-old son sitting in the back seat, causing him to veer off the road.

According to Fransen, speed did not appear to have been a factor in the collision.
