Ryan Vogelsong or Yusmeiro Petit could make a spot start next Thursday in the final game of a three-game series against the Dodgers, manager Bruce Bochy told reporters Sunday morning.
With Jake Peavy placed on the 15-day DL Saturday with back tightness, Bochy will likely elect to keep his rotation on schedule, rather than force everybody to start a day earlier:
“More than likely, you’ll see us throw either Vogey or Petit in there. We haven’t decided yet. Just to give (the rotation) their extra day. That’s worked so well for us over the years. That’s kind of the way we’re leaning right now. Doesn’t mean we can’t change. (Pitching coach Dave Righetti) and I talked this morning about it. You may see us insert one of our long guys.”
Neither Petit, an invaluable piece during last year’s World Series run, nor Vogelsong have started promisingly in 2015. Petit currently boasts a 4.91 in five relief appearances, while the veteran Vogelsong has been shelled all three times he’s taken the mound, with an ERA currently sitting at a bloated 10.45.
Peavy’s back issue flared up again during his start on Friday. The club expects the right-hander to miss two to three weeks after an MRI revealed a strain and issues with his SI joint.
A dead man was found lying in the parking lot of a San Bruno motel this morning.
An overdue day off lies ahead for San Francisco before the Dodgers trot into town Tuesday.
