Wondo earns national call up for Mexico clash

Jurgen Klinsmann has once again summoned San Jose Earthquakes striker Chris Wondolowski to the United States Men’s National Team, this time for Wednesday’s upcoming clash against rivals Mexico at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

This will be the third call-up in 2015 for Wondolowski, 32, with the striker previously making appearances in a 3-2 loss to Chile on Jan. 28, and a 2-0 win against Panama on Feb. 8. The next competitive tournament on the horizon for the U.S. is the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup, a competition in which Wondolowski participated in 2011 and 2013, and that he will hope to get the call for once again this summer.

Because Wednesday’s match falls outside an official FIFA international fixture date, Wondolowski will join a group consisting mostly of players that play in North American leagues, with 14 representing the MLS and five representing Mexico’s Liga MX. Nine of the players selected were part of the 2014 World Cup squad in Brazil.

Wondolowski has not been named to the starting XI for the national team in 2015, and it will be interesting to see if that trend continues. The Earthquakes play in Harrison, N.J. Friday against the New York Red Bulls.

The United States has gone undefeated in all five matches against Mexico during the Klinsmann era, going 2-0-3 against El Tri since the summer of 2011. Wednesday’s match kicks off at 5:30 p.m. PDT on Fox Sports 1.
