Funeral mass scheduled for slain bass player

A funeral mass for 26-year-old musician Emiliano “Emilio” Nevarez, who was fatally shot outside a bar in downtown Oakland early Sunday morning, will be held in Antioch on Wednesday, his family said Friday.

Police said Nevarez, a bass player and vocalist for the punk rock bank The Lucky Eejits, was packing up his equipment in the 400 block of 14th Street at about 1:15 a.m. Sunday when a stray bullet struck him. Nevarez wasn’t the intended target of the gunfire. Police said two people were engaged in an argument unrelated to him when someone started shooting. No one has been arrested for the shooting.

On Thursday Oakland police released photos of a man and a woman they said are persons of interest in the case and were with the suspect the night of the shooting. There is a $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest of the suspect in the case.

Nevarez’s family said there will be a funeral mass for him at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church at 1313 A Street in Antioch at 1 p.m. on Wednesday. They said family and friends are also invited to a viewing and rosary at the Holy Angels Funeral Center at 2200 East 18th Street in Antioch from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
