Police arrested a 30-year-old Dublin man on suspicion of attempting to break into a Danville library on Friday evening, police said.
Officers responded to a report from a resident at 10:38 p.m. who told police someone was trying to break into the library, located at 400 Front St., police said.
Arriving officers found a man who appeared to be trying to pry open one of the library’s doors with a tool, according to police.
Officers identified the man as Matthew Hammack and took him into custody, police said.
At the same time, a second person called police to report a man had exited a building in the 600 block of Hartz Avenue with several items on him.
Officers at the library recognized the witness’s description of the suspect as matching Hammack.
Police arrested Hammack on suspicion of burglary and attempted burglary and booked him in jail.
Danville police Chief Steve Simpkins lauded the community’s involvement in alerting law enforcement to the suspicious activity:
“It is exactly this sort of partnership between the Danville Police Department and the community which makes Danville the great place that it is and a place that criminals should avoid.”
