Driver killed in Big Sur cliff plunge

The California Highway Patrol is on scene of an accident in the Big Sur area of Monterey County where a person drove off of state Highway 1 and died after the vehicle fell down a cliff to the beach, according to the CHP.

The CHP received a call at 3:31 p.m. about a vehicle falling over the side of a cliff beside Highway 1 near the Lucia area of unincorporated Big Sur on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, officers said. The person was ejected and died at the scene as the vehicle continued to tumble and ended up on the beach about 300 feet down, CHP officials said.

A witness reported seeing a small red vehicle, possibly a Ford Mustang or Honda, driving north on the highway and hearing screeching tires before the vehicle crashed into a sign, struck dirt and plunged off the roadway, officers said.

The body of the person was recovered at 5:14 p.m., according to the CHP. The Big Sur Volunteer Fire Brigade, personnel from the U.S. Forest Service and a CHP helicopter crew all assisted in the effort to recover the victim, the CHP said.
