Young child hurt in freeway shooting

A young boy riding in a car was shot on Interstate Highway 880 in West Oakland on Sunday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The boy was in the car with two or three other people heading north on I-880 near the Port of Oakland at about 12:30 p.m., CHP Officer Sean Wilkenfeld said. As they approached the Seventh Street off-ramp, a dark four-door sedan with dark tinted windows and paper license plates pulled up alongside their car, Wilkenfeld said.

The driver of the second car pointed a handgun out of his driver’s side window and fired one round at their car, hitting the child. The shooter then sped away and got off the highway onto Seventh Street. The victims kept driving to Kaiser Permanente Richmond Medical Center to get the child treated for the gunshot wound, Wilkenfeld said.

The child’s injuries were not life-threatening. The suspect has not been found as of this morning, Wilkenfeld said.

CHP investigators are still trying to determine the motive for the shooting and are asking any witnesses to come forward. Anyone with information about the shooting has been asked to call the CHP’s Oakland area office at (510) 450-3821.
