Three men were injured in an apparent drive-by shooting on U.S. Highway 101 in Sunnyvale early this morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officers were dispatched around 2:30 a.m. to the Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara Medical Center on a report of four shooting victims who had arrived at the hospital, CHP officials said.
Roughly 15 minutes prior, four men were driving south on Highway 101 in a silver Chevrolet Impala and took the Lawrence Expressway off-ramp in Sunnyvale where CHP officials said someone or some people shot at their vehicle.
The driver, a Gilroy man, suffered three gunshot wounds in the abdomen and is in critical condition, CHP officials said. The front passenger, a Santa Clara man, suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen as well and CHP officials said he is in stable condition. The left rear passenger, also a Santa Clara man, suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and is in stable condition, CHP officials said.
A San Jose man who was sitting in the right rear seat was uninjured, CHP officials said.
CHP officers found the Impala at the hospital and discovered six bullet holes in the left side doors of the vehicle. CHP officials said the vehicle was towed and taken as evidence.
The Lawrence Expressway off-ramp was temporarily shut down for roughly a half hour while CHP officers investigated the scene.
CHP officials said the closure had little impact on traffic.
A white-colored Ford Explorer was seen in the vicinity of the shooting, but CHP officials said investigators are still trying to determine if the car was related to the incident.
CHP officials said investigators haven’t determined a motive for the shooting and are encouraging anyone with information related to the investigation to all CHP at (408) 467-5400.
