The Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety resuscitated a 9-year-old student who collapsed at an elementary school Monday morning.
Fire and patrol units responded at 10:23 a.m. to Evergreen Elementary School at 1125 Emily Ave. where they boy collapsed and stopped breathing on the playground, Sgt. Dale Utecht said. When police and fire units arrived three minutes later, a teacher had already begun CPR, Utecht said.
Public safety officers connected the student to an automated external defibrillator while continuing CPR. The AED delivered one shock to the boy to return his heart to the correct rhythm and the boy’s condition began to gradually improve, Utecht said.
The boy had a strong pulse and was breathing on his own when a Sonoma Life Support ambulance arrived to take him to a hospital, Utecht said.
