Stolen truck retrieved from Oakland Estuary

A stolen pickup truck was found in the water in the Oakland Estuary Tuesday morning but no one was found inside, a fire battalion chief said.

The truck was found at 5:13 a.m. by a fireboat crew east of the Fruitvale Bridge, Oakland Fire Battalion Chief Emon Usher said.

A little bit of the truck was poking out of the water, but as the tide receded, more of the vehicle became visible.

Crews checked in and around the truck and did not find anyone there, Usher said.

Crews relayed the truck’s license plate number to Oakland police and determined the vehicle was reported stolen, he said.

A hazardous materials crew was initially called to the scene out of concern that fuel leaked from the truck, but was later canceled after authorities determined there was minimal leakage, Usher said.

A tow truck assisted in pulling the truck out of the water at about 7 a.m., he said.
