The Alameda County Board of Supervisors has voted unanimously to ban skateboarding on all county property, which means that violators can be cited after the ordinance takes effect in 30 days.
The board’s vote on Tuesday came at the request of Sheriff Gregory Ahern, who told the board in a memo that skateboarders “are creating significant damage” to the front steps of the Rene C. Davidson Courthouse in Oakland, the county administration building across the street and other county properties.
Ahern said that in addition to the damage that:
“These skateboarders are creating a liability issue for the county.”
Ahern said that currently there is no Oakland city ordinance that would allow for issuing skateboarding citations and no county ordinance against skateboarding that would apply to county facilities in Oakland.
The sheriff said the ordinance is site-specific to the Rene C. Davidson Courthouse, the administration building and any other county property, as long as the property “is clearly and conspicuously posted with signs stating that skateboarding is prohibited.”
The ordinance doesn’t apply to county roads, streets, highways, sidewalks, lanes or alleys.
