A’s Coco Crisp scores his own app

Athletics outfielder Coco Crisp kept himself busy over the offseason — and, he hopes, his fans even busier during the season — with his new, free app “Coco’s Fro Patrol.”

The game, currently available to iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch users, allows gamers to play as Coco, dragging him from side-to-side to use his signature Afro hairstyle to catch as many baseballs, grand slams, curve balls, and power-ups as they can.

The more baseballs collected, the more goodies players can unlock, such as hidden stages, new uniforms, upgrades, and umpires. These umpires let users restart the game from any inning accomplished.

Be careful though, because the game is also designed for users to avoid objects such as garbage, bubble gum, cue the “DUN DUN DUNNN!” sound effects, and hair clippers.

If users catch the hair clippers three times, just like in the traditional game of baseball, they strike out.

More than 1,000 players have downloaded the game in its first few days of its release. So far, players also include former teammate Daric Barton to the adorable Sogard family.

Crisp told SFGate’s Ann Killion that he is extremely interested in computer programming and enrolled in courses online, but found it too difficult to juggle with playing.

However, Crisp said he wants to learn to code and is planning to pursue courses after he retires.

Crisp joins his Bay Area neighbor, San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey in the digital world.

Posey, who released his game Buster Bash two years ago holds the title of first Major League Baseball player who marketed his own mobile app game.

Per Crisp’s Twitter account, the game will launch for Android devices based on the game’s success.
