Shortly before 2 a.m. today, an officer pulled over a car in the area near Winton Avenue and Soto Road, Hayward police Sgt. Tasha DeCosta said.
The suspect stepped out of the car and shot at the officer, DeCosta said.
The officer returned fire and was not injured in the incident, according to police.
The suspect was driving a car that might be connected with a shooting that happened around 10 p.m. Saturday, DeCosta said.
Police said they are still searching for the suspect and residents are being asked to shelter in place. Anyone who sees anything suspicious in the area is asked to call Hayward police at (510) 293-7000.
