Transients may have started a one-alarm fire that spread to about 100 porta-potties at a storage facility in Hayward early Saturday morning, a fire spokeswoman said.
Firefighters responded to a report of a fire at the facility near Industrial Parkway and Pacific Street shortly before 12:30 a.m., Hayward fire spokesman Don Nichelson said. It appears the fire started in one porta-pottie and spread to about 100, he said.
The blaze was extinguished about 20 minutes later, according to Nichelson. Fire investigators suspect transients living in the area may have started the blaze and fled the scene, he said. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
