Man killed at shooting vigil identified

A man killed in a shooting on Friday night that also injured a woman in Bay Point where a vigil for a 2009 murder victim was taking place has been identified, officials from the Contra Costa County sheriff’s and coroner’s offices said Saturday.

Ron Easterling, 40, of Bay Point, was killed in a shooting in the area of Marin Avenue and Willow Pass Road around 9:40 p.m. Friday, according to the coroner’s office. Deputies responded to a report of shots fired in the area and arrived to find Easterling who was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency crews, Lee said.

A 22-year-old woman was injured at the scene and transported to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek for injuries not considered life-threatening, according to Lee. A crowd was in the area Friday night for a vigil celebrating the birthday of a man who was killed there in 2009, the spokesman said.

Witnesses reported that a person had fled the scene after the shooting, Lee said. Detectives are working to determine the suspect’s identity and motive, according to Lee.
