Naked, suicidal man detained on I-580 overpass

A naked man turned heads on Interstate Highway 580 this morning while authorities investigated a three-car hit-and-run collision near Harrison Avenue in Oakland, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The man was detained with the assistance of an Oakland police officer who was driving past at the time, according to CHP Officer Daniel Hill:

“He was taken into custody and put on a psych hold by the OPD. … We dealt with him on the freeway and we stopped him from jumping over the overpasses.”

It seems that the naked man was not related to the car crash CHP officers were on scene to investigate, Hill said. While pedestrians can be cited for walking in highway traffic, and there may also be a law against doing so while naked, Hill said the CHP is unlikely to pursue charges against the individual in question:

“There are laws concerning those issues, however the primary focus with a person in that mental state is not necessarily to take punitive action, but rather to make sure they get the care they need.”

The incident that brought law enforcement officers to the scene in the first place was a three-car collision involving a Lexus sedan and a Toyota Rav 4. The call came in around 6:30 a.m. when one of the vehicles overturned on westbound I-580, CHP officials said.

A third vehicle is believed to have been involved in the collision, but the driver fled the scene and no description of the vehicle or it’s driver was available this morning. No one was injured in the collision, including the driver of the overturned vehicle, who was buckled up, according to the CHP.
