Firefighters Thursday morning remain at the scene of a four-alarm apartment fire in San Francisco’s Mission District that killed one person, injured at least six and displaced dozens of people.
Crews are still battling hotspots at the building in the 3200 block of Mission Street. Police and firefighters responded at 6:46 p.m. Wednesday to the apartment building to find flames shooting from its side.
The fire was contained late Wednesday night, but firefighters are working to put out. Police and firefighters evacuated several residents from the building. Six people were transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation injuries, and one person, who was evacuated from the building, later died from his injuries, police said.
Police said aid was given to the man at the scene, but he was unable to overcome his injuries. It does not appear foul play or arson placed a factor in the fire, police said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Police shut down the area surrounding the fire Wednesday as crews battled the blaze.
Several streets are still closed this morning. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency announced this morning the 14-Mission has been rerouted onto South Van Ness Avenue between 14th and 26th streets due to the fire. The 49-Mission has also been rerouted onto South Van Ness Avenue between 14th and 26th streets.
The American Red Cross responded to the scene to offer aid to the more than 40 displaced victims of the fire.
