The death of a 57-year-old inmate Monday morning at a San Francisco County Jail in San Bruno remains under investigation.
The inmate, identified as San Francisco resident Alvin Haynes, reportedly died at San Francisco County Jail No. 5 at 1 Moreland Drive in San Bruno around 10:30 a.m. Monday, according to Chief Deputy Kathy Gorwood, a spokeswoman for the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department.
Gorwood said Haynes had previously been arrested for burglary, receiving or buying stolen property, possession of burglary tools, and resisting or delaying arrest. He was remanded into custody on a probation violation for possession of a controlled substance.
Gorwood did not say what led up to Haynes’ death.
According to the San Mateo County coroner’s office, an autopsy is being conducted since there is no clear medical history that explains the inmate’s death. Since the jail is located in San Bruno, an investigation into the death will be handled by the San Mateo County district attorney’s, sheriff’s and coroner’s offices.
The San Francisco Sheriff’s Department will also investigate Haynes’ death and the events that led up to it, as is protocol.
