Romanian fugitive found panhandling in East Bay

A man sought in Romania for attempted murder was arrested after being found panhandling in Orinda on Monday, police said.

Officers responded at about 2:40 p.m. Monday to a call about someone panhandling in a supermarket parking lot on Camino Sobrante, according to Orinda police. Police made contact with the man, Gabriel Stoica, whose name was checked and found to be linked to an outstanding warrant from Romania for attempted murder.

Officers took Stoica, 28, into custody without incident and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials later took custody of him, police said.
