Pedestrian killed by suspected street racers

A female pedestrian struck and killed Monday in San Jose by the driver of a car suspected of racing another car was 24-year-old Kiran Pabla, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office.

Pabla, a San Jose resident, was out walking or running shortly after noon Monday when the drivers of two cars apparently racing each other west on Yerba Buena Road east of Edenwood Drive lost control and veered to the right, police said.

The two cars, driving at high speeds, smashed into a guardrail and ended up on the sidewalk along Yerba Buena Road, according to police. One of the vehicles struck Pabla and pinned her against a tree, where she suffered fatal injuries, officers said.

Police arrested the two drivers, Gabriel Bacerra, 19, and Manuel Maldonado-Avalos, 24, on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and reckless driving causing great bodily injury.
