Raiders free safety Charles Woodson will return for a 17th NFL season after signing a one-year extension with Oakland Monday.
The prestigious career of Charles Woodson isn’t coming to a close yet.
The likely Hall of Famer signed a one-year contract extension with the Raiders, the team announced Monday, and will remain in Silver and Black for the 2015 season.
Woodson accrued four interceptions in 2014, most of any on the team, and came through with numerous clutch plays throughout the year.
He also comes with something the Raiders need and covet: Veteran savvy, which may help the mostly young roster mature together.
Woodson’s straightforward and knowledgeable attitude towards the game has been credited by players and coaches as an important cog to success in the Raiders’ short- and long-term future.
Oakland drafted Woodson in the first round of the 1998 NFL Draft out of the University of Michigan. Woodson became the first predominately defensive player to win the Heisman Trophy with the Wolverines.
Woodson will turn 39 this October, which led to speculation that he might retire after a disastrous 2014 season that held only three wins.
Woodson himself hadn’t made up his mind as the season closed, though the team held a clear stance that they wanted him back.
This new deal will lead Woodson to his 17th NFL season, and make him the oldest defensive player in the league.
