Child molester convicted of 40 counts

A 40-year-old La Honda resident was convicted on 40 counts of child molestation Thursday and could spend the rest of his life in prison, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.

Neil Aunko was convicted of repeatedly sodomizing his 10-year-old stepdaughter. If and when she resisted, Aunko pinned the victim down and forcibly assaulted her, prosecutors said. On four separate occasions when a friend stayed over, Aunko went into their room and “humped” her over the pajamas.

Deputy district attorney Karen Guidotti said:

“His conduct was at the far end of the continuum of child molestation in terms of its’ egregious nature. … He should never again be in a position where he can touch another child. “

She added:

“He is facing life in prison, it’s just a matter of what the bottom is. … It can go anywhere from 15 to life all the way up to about 1,000 years (in prison).”

Aunko is facing multiple life sentences, and is currently in custody on no-bail status. His sentencing has been scheduled for 9 a.m. March 10. Defense attorney Gerritt Rutgers could not immediately be reached for comment this morning.
