Fremont officers kill knife-wielding man

An adult male who reportedly had been brandishing a knife was killed in a confrontation with police in Fremont Friday afternoon, police said.

Three Fremont officers were dispatched to Lake Arrowhead Avenue near Sylvester Harvey Park at about 2:15 p.m. today after police received a report of a man who was brandishing a knife at juveniles, authorities said.

Police said that after officers located the suspect, who was armed, one officer fired a Taser stun gun at the suspect and a second officer fired a service weapon at the suspect. The suspect, who has not yet been positively identified, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Fremont police weren’t immediately available for comment on why the officers fired at the suspect. None of the involved officers were injured, nor were any residents who live in the area, according to police.

Fremont police said they will provide more detailed information later. Detectives are still on the scene investigating the shooting and are expected to be there for several more hours.

Police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques said:

“We believe he was in the neighborhood and other individuals may have encountered him, not necessarily with the knife.”

Anyone with information on the shooting or suspect is asked to call police at (510) 790-6900 or contact a police officer, Bosques said. The shooting is being investigated jointly with the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.
