Pursuit ends in crash outside Caldecott tunnel

A multi-car crash Monday afternoon on state Highway 24 in Oakland just outside of the Caldecott Tunnel involved a car fleeing from Contra Costa County sheriff’s deputies, according to the California Highway Patrol.

UPDATE 5:15 p.m. Pair arrested after Caldecott crash.

The crash was reported at 1:45 p.m. and involved at least three vehicles, CHP officials said. Contra Costa County sheriff’s deputies were pursuing the vehicle on westbound Highway 24 but canceled the pursuit around Wilder Road before the tunnel, CHP Officer Sean Wilkenfeld said.

A red sedan overturned by Old Tunnel Road on the Oakland side of the tunnel, according to the CHP. Witnesses told CHP officers it was the car pursued by sheriff’s deputies and two occupants got out of the car and started running.

CHP officers have at least one suspect detained at the scene, Wilkenfeld said. He said an ambulance has been called there but he did not know the extent of the injuries or how many people were injured.

The off-ramp to Old Tunnel Road was blocked Tuesday afternoon but all lanes of westbound Highway 24 are open, CHP officials said.
