CHP helicopters called to fatal Sunol crash

At least one person died and two helicopters have been called to airlift people injured in a collision this evening on state Highway 84 in Sunol, an unincorporated area in Alameda County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers responded to a report of a collision involving at least two vehicles in the westbound lanes of Highway 84 at 6:17 p.m., said CHP Officer Damian Cistaro.

Cistaro said at least one person was pronounced dead at the scene.

CHP is landing two helicopters to airlift other injured parties to area hospitals, Cistaro said, adding he didn’t yet know how many people were involved in the collision.

Cistaro said the cars may already be off of the roadway but a Sig-alert was issued at 6:59 p.m. for all westbound lanes on Highway 84 so CHP could land the helicopters.

The roadway is expected to reopen around 7:30 p.m., he said.
