A Newark apartment building was declared uninhabitable after a large eucalyptus tree fell on it during Tuesday’s windstorms, police said Friday.
Police responded to assist the Alameda County Fire Department at about 2:40 p.m. with the tree that had fallen on an apartment complex in the 37000 block of Walnut Street. The 60- to 70-year-old eucalyptus tree caused structural damage to the building when it fell.
The fire department red-tagged the building as unsafe to enter or inhabit, police said. It was one of several trees that fell in Newark as a result of Tuesday’s large windstorm, which caused damage throughout the region and knocked out power for nearly 200,000 residents and businesses.
Another tree fell near the corner of Parada Street and Potrero Drive at about 4:30 p.m., damaging a parked car and causing major traffic jams, according to police.
Another tree fell near the corner of Cedar Boulevard and Edgewater Drive just before 5 p.m., causing further traffic disruption, police said. Newark police volunteers assisted in directing traffic there.
