Brandon Moss is the latest All-Star to be dealt away by the Oakland Athletics, who sent the 31-year-old first baseman to Cleveland for prospect Joey Wendle.
Brandon Moss is no longer the Oakland A’s first baseman.
The 31-year-old All-Star was traded to Cleveland early Monday morning for Joey Wendle, a 24-year-old minor league infielder.
Moss’ 2014 season with Oakland started on a high note, with 21 home runs earning the first All-Star appearance of his eight-year MLB career.
It came to a screeching halt shortly thereafter, as Moss hit .173, with just 31 hits in 179 at bats and 61 strikeouts from the middle of July on to September. His fall from grace came as the A’s dropped game after game.
Wendle compiled a .725 OPS, 85 hits, and 8 home runs in 500 at bats with the Double-A Akron Rubberducks in 2014.
A platoon of Billy Butler and Ike Davis will supplant Moss, and Wendle will compete for a second base or shortstop spot, the A’s biggest need in the young offseason.
Oakland has been rumored to be shopping starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija, and the fire sale of All-Stars doesn’t appear to be over. A Samardzija trade, though, isn’t likely to happen until winter meetings end on December 11.
