San Francisco Police Sgt. Ian Furminger and Officer Edmond Robles were convicted Friday of felony charges from the theft of money and property during searches in 2009.
The verdict was read in the court of U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer at around noon Friday. Officer Edmond Robles was convicted of five counts and Sgt. Ian Furminger was convicted of four, police officials said.
Furminger and Robles had each been charged with eight counts and Furminger had also been charged with extorting property in 2011 and 2012. Police did not immediately confirm which charges they were convicted for.
The charges included conspiracy to commit theft from a federally funded program – namely, the San Francisco Police Department; theft of more than $5,000 worth of property from a federally funded program; conspiracy against civil rights, two counts of wire fraud; two counts of defrauding the citizens of San Francisco of their honest services; and conspiracy to distribute drugs.
San Francisco public defender Jeff Adachi said in a statement:
“The convictions bring a measure of justice to the victims, who were ripped off, falsely arrested and disbelieved for far too long. … Those 12 jurors sent a message — that there are consequences for bullies who victimize the poor and powerless under color of authority.”
